Alderley Edge is a village on a striking red sandstone escarpment in Cheshire East, England, about 14 miles south of Manchester. The craggy ridge gives panoramic views over the Cheshire Plain towards the Peak District and is backed by National Trust woodland and a network of bridleways, attracting walkers and rock-climbers to features such as the King's Cave and the famous local legend of the Wizard of Alderley.
Historically the area is notable for prehistoric and 19th-century mining of copper and other ores and for sandstone quarrying, and today it combines that heritage with an affluent commuter community: a busy high street of cafes, boutiques and independent shops, a railway station linking to Manchester, and some of the most expensive housing in the county. The mix of scenic ridge, local folklore and village amenities gives Alderley Edge a distinctive cultural and social character.
