Crewe in Cheshire East, England grew up as a classic Victorian railway town after the arrival of the Grand Junction Railway and the founding of Crewe Works in the 19th century; its station remains one of the country’s major rail junctions and the grid of terraced streets, the Victorian Queen's Park and the displays at the Crewe Heritage Centre still testify to that industrial past. The town is also known for automotive engineering, with high-end car manufacturing established there, and for the local football club Crewe Alexandra, which plays a big part in community life.
Today Crewe combines engineering, rail maintenance and retail-led regeneration, with strong road and rail links to nearby cities and the Cheshire countryside; social life mixes traditional working-class roots with newer developments and a diverse local population, while canals and green spaces like the nearby Shropshire Union Canal provide quieter contrasts to the town’s industrial story.
