Chelmsford is the county city of Essex in England, granted city status in 2012. It sits on the River Chelmer about 30–35 miles north‑east of London, with fast rail links to Liverpool Street and good road connections, which help make it both a commuter hub and a regional administrative and commercial centre.
Originally a Roman and later medieval market town, Chelmsford is best known for the pioneering wireless work of Marconi and retains a mix of historic centres and Victorian suburbs alongside new retail, tech and service-sector developments. Green spaces such as Hylands Park and nearby RHS Garden Hyde Hall, a compact cathedral in the city centre and a lively programme of festivals and markets give it a strong local character; the urban area now serves a population of roughly 170,000.
