The district centres on the historic city of Lincoln, set on a limestone hill overlooking the River Witham with the broad harbour-like Brayford Pool at its foot. The authority covers the city proper together with nearby suburbs and lower-lying agricultural fenland, with the escarpment known locally as the Lincoln Cliff giving the area a recognisable skyline.

Lincoln has deep roots - from its Roman foundation as Lindum Colonia through a medieval heyday built around wool and ecclesiastical power - and that history is still visible in landmarks such as Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle.
