Wooler sits at the foot of the Cheviot Hills in north Northumberland, close to the winding River Till and acting as a gateway to the rolling moorland of Northumberland National Park. Its location makes it popular with walkers and cyclists heading into the Cheviots, and the surrounding landscape - dry stone walls, commons and heather moor - supports a strong upland farming tradition, especially sheep and beef.
Despite its small size the town has long been a local service and market centre, with independent shops, cafés and pubs that cater for visitors as well as local families; tourism now sits alongside agriculture in the local economy. The area is rich in borderland history, with nearby Flodden battlefield and the defensive pele towers and bastle houses that recall centuries of cross-border raiding, and community events such as agricultural shows keep those rural traditions alive.
