Peterborough sits in the north of Cambridgeshire, straddling the River Nene on the southern edge of the Fens. Its skyline is dominated by the fine Norman Peterborough Cathedral, famous for its striking Octagon lantern and as the original burial place of Catherine of Aragon (and temporarily of Mary, Queen of Scots). The area also boasts the Bronze Age site at Flag Fen, underlining a long human history that predates the medieval market town.
Today Peterborough is an important transport and logistics hub on the East Coast Main Line, within easy reach of London, and expanded rapidly after its designation as a New Town in the 1960s. The local economy mixes manufacturing, food processing and distribution, while cultural life centres on venues, parks such as Nene Park, and community organisations; socially it’s one of the UK’s faster-growing and more diverse cities, with a proud local identity reflected in its football club and community festivals.
