Southend-on-Sea is a seaside town on the northern shore of the Thames Estuary in Essex, about 40 miles east of London. It rose to prominence as a Victorian pleasure resort and still revolves around its extensive seafront and the famous Southend Pier, the world’s longest pleasure pier, which stretches for over a mile into the estuary.
Today Southend-on-Sea combines tourism - with attractions such as Adventure Island and the Cliffs Pavilion - with commuter links to London and local economic activity around London Southend Airport.
