Stockton-on-Tees sits on the north bank of the River Tees in the heart of the Tees Valley, between Darlington and Middlesbrough. It grew up as a busy port and market town and played a key role in the early railway age - the Stockton and Darlington era links the town to the dawn of passenger rail - so you still find Georgian quayside buildings and a long market tradition.
Today Stockton-on-Tees blends industrial heritage and modern regeneration: former shipbuilding and chemical hubs nearby (for example Billingham) have given way to retail, logistics and cultural activity, with events like the Stockton International Riverside Festival and local arts centres enlivening the town. The unitary borough is also unusual in that it straddles the historic counties of County Durham and North Yorkshire, giving it a mixed social and civic identity.
