Isle of Gigha is a small, low-lying island off the west coast of Kintyre in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, known for its sandy bays, sheltered coastline and surprisingly mild, almost subtropical gardens at Achamore Gardens. The island’s position in the Inner Hebrides and the influence of the Gulf Stream give it a wealth of trees and flowers not often seen so far north, and there are good walks, beaches and views across to neighbouring islands.
Gigha has a strong community spirit after the celebrated community buyout in 2002, with local enterprises based on tourism, small-scale farming and renewable energy helping to sustain the island’s small population. Its history is a mix of Gaelic and Norse influence, and the island’s self-determination and distinctive cultural life make it a notable example of community ownership in rural Scotland; regular ferries link it to the mainland at Tayinloan.
