An Taobh Siar agus Nis occupies the north‑west corner of the Isle of Lewis in Na h‑Eileanan Siar, a sweep of wind‑scoured coast, machair and peatland dotted with small crofting townships and dramatic headlands such as the Butt of Lewis. The landscape is dominated by the Atlantic, with rich seabird colonies, dunes and lochs that give the area a remote, wild character.
Socially and culturally it is a stronghold of Scottish Gaelic, where crofting, fishing and traditional crafts remain visible parts of everyday life alongside community‑owned initiatives and small tourism enterprises. The long human story is evident in scattered archaeological remains - brochs and Norse‑era traces - and a network of tight‑knit villages that rely on nearby Stornoway for many services while keeping a distinctive local identity.
