Papa Westray is a tiny, windswept member of the Orkney Islands off Scotland’s north coast, known locally as Papay. With fewer than a hundred residents it feels distinctly remote but lively, a place of crofts, coastal grasslands and strong Norse and Gaelic roots - the name reflects the old word for priests and hints at a long, layered history.
The island punches above its weight for heritage and wildlife: the Neolithic farm remains at the Knap of Howar are among the oldest stone houses in northern Europe, and the coastline supports rich seabird life and marine interest. The small economy mixes crofting and fishing with summer tourism, helped by the famously brief scheduled flight to nearby Westray, and a close-knit community atmosphere centred on village facilities and seasonal visitors.
