South Ronaldsay sits at the southern edge of the Orkney Islands, a low‑lying island of red sandstone, fertile farmland and wide, wind‑scoured beaches. It is linked to Mainland Orkney and neighbouring isles by the wartime Churchill Barriers, which also lead to Burray, and lies close to the sheltered waters of Scapa Flow, giving the island a long maritime history and an active fishing and farming economy with a growing tourism trade.
Local culture blends Norse and Scottish traditions and the island is famed for its archaeology: the Isbister chambered cairn known as the Tomb of the Eagles is one of the most striking prehistoric sites in Scotland. The nearby wartime stories - including the Italian prisoners’ work on the Barriers and the little chapel they built on Burray - add human interest, while tight‑knit villages such as St Margaret’s Hope provide community events, ferry connections and a friendly base for exploring the wider archipelago.
