Foula

Foula is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the Shetland archipelago of Scotland, famed for its stark, windswept cliffs, dramatic sea stacks and huge seabird colonies. The island’s rugged topography and exposed position give spectacular views and make it a magnet for birdwatchers and photographers, while its name reflects a long Norse history and a landscape famously shaped by the sea and wind.

The tiny, close-knit community sustains a traditional crofting and fishing lifestyle, supplemented increasingly by visits from wildlife enthusiasts and a trickle of adventurous walkers. Access is limited - by a scheduled ferry and occasional small aircraft - so services are basic, population numbers small and local customs strong, which together preserve much of the island’s sense of isolation and cultural continuity.
