Shetland West sits on the western side of the Shetland Mainland in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. The ward is defined by a rugged, maritime landscape of steep cliffs, sheltered voes, machair and moorland, with views out to numerous skerries and the North Atlantic; small harbours and ferry links stitch together widely dispersed coastal communities.
Economically and socially it remains rooted in crofting and fishing, while aquaculture, renewables and support services to the wider North Sea economy also play a part. The area is rich in Norse heritage and archaeology - brochs, place‑names and old settlements reflect a long history - and attracts walkers and wildlife enthusiasts drawn to its seabird colonies, quiet beaches and strong local community life.
