Whalsay

Whalsay is a compact, windswept island in the Shetland archipelago of Scotland, covering roughly ten square kilometres and home to about a thousand people. The landscape is a mix of moorland, small lochs and rugged coastline with sea cliffs and sheltered bays; the community is centred on the busy fishing port of Symbister, and regular ferries link the island to the Shetland Mainland.

Fishing, aquaculture and small-scale boatbuilding remain the economic pulse of the island, while a strong sense of community shows in local clubs, halls and seasonal events. Archaeological traces and Norse place‑names hint at a long human presence, and wildlife watchers value the seabirds and marine mammals that frequent the surrounding waters, making Whalsay both a working island and a place of natural and cultural interest.
