Yell is the second-largest of the Shetland Islands, sitting between Mainland and Unst. The island is famed for its wild, indented coastline of cliffs, voes and sea stacks, extensive peat moorland and freshwater lochs; its shores and waters support rich wildlife, especially otters and seabird colonies including puffins.
Settlement is dispersed in small crofting townships with a strong Norse heritage visible in place names and archaeological remains from Bronze Age and Viking periods. The local economy centres on crofting, fishing and aquaculture, with increasing interest from nature-based tourism, while tight-knit communities keep traditional crafts and island festivals alive.
