Winsford sits in the Weaver Valley on the banks of the River Weaver in Cheshire West and Chester. The town is notable for its "flashes" - broad lakes and wetlands created by historic salt-mining subsidence - now important wildlife sites and local recreation areas, giving a surprisingly rural, watery feel close to its industrial roots.
Historically the settlement grew around salt extraction, the river navigation and later the railway; it still hosts one of the UK's largest rock-salt mines, a long-standing economic anchor. Today Winsford mixes light industry, retail and community regeneration with a strong local identity and events that reflect its working-class and salt-town heritage.
