Carlisle sits at the mouth of the River Eden close to the Anglo‑Scottish border in historic Cumberland, in north‑west England. With Roman origins at the western end of Hadrian's Wall, a medieval castle and a cathedral, the compact historic centre still shows the imprint of centuries as a frontier settlement.
Today it functions as a regional hub - a retail and public‑sector centre with logistics and tourism links and a gateway to the Lake District - and institutions such as Tullie House interpret its archaeology, border history and industrial past, all of which continue to shape the city's character and economy.
