Cumberland is a unitary authority created in 2023 that reunites much of the old county area by combining the former districts of Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland. It stretches from the tidal Solway Firth and the city of Carlisle in the north, across the rolling fells of the Lake District to the Irish Sea coast, with market towns and hubs such as Keswick and Workington punctuating a largely rural landscape.
The area mixes a strong tourism economy centred on lakeland scenery and outdoor pursuits with significant industrial and energy activity around Sellafield, and a long history visible in Roman remains along Hadrian's Wall and medieval sites like Carlisle Castle. That blend gives Cumberland a distinctive cultural identity - traditional farming and village life, pockets of post‑industrial coastal communities, and a resilient visitor economy rooted in scenery, history and outdoor culture.
