Castle Point

Castle Point sits on the northern side of the Thames estuary in Essex, combining suburban towns and a distinctive reclaimed island community. The borough covers places such as Benfleet, Thundersley, Hadleigh and Canvey Island, so you get a mix of shoreline, marshland and residential neighbourhoods within a compact area.

Geographically it is notable for the dramatic ruins of Hadleigh Castle overlooking the estuary and for low-lying Canvey Island, which is protected by sea defences put in place after the North Sea flood of 1953. The district also contains valuable coastal habitats and striking brownfield wildlife sites such as Canvey Wick, now recognised for their biodiversity.

Economically the area combines a commuter role into London with riverside industry on the estuary - Canvey Island has long housed oil storage and related facilities - alongside local retail, leisure and small businesses. Good road links and nearby rail at Benfleet, plus proximity to Southend-on-Sea, mean the borough balances a seaside, community-minded culture with its more utilitarian industrial and commuting functions.
