Buckhurst Hill sits on the edge of Epping Forest in the district of Epping Forest, Essex, immediately north-east of London. Tree-lined streets, pockets of ancient woodland and the nearby course of the River Roding give the area a distinctly green, village-like character, while Buckhurst Hill station on the Central line keeps the capital within easy commuting distance.
Much of the town grew as a commuter suburb in the 19th and early 20th centuries, so you’ll find a lot of Victorian and Edwardian houses and several conservation areas. There’s a busy local high street with independent shops and cafés, active community and sports clubs, good schools, and a generally family-oriented, relatively affluent feel compared with other parts of Essex; neighbouring towns include Loughton and Chigwell, which share the same forest-edge character.
