Fareham is a compact borough in Hampshire, sitting roughly midway between Portsmouth and Southampton on the north shore of Portsmouth Harbour. The district centres on the historic market town of Fareham and also includes coastal villages and suburbs such as Portchester, Titchfield, Hill Head and Stubbington.
Geographically it occupies the head of a tidal inlet leading into the Solent, with a mix of creek-side marshes, seaside frontage and suburban development. There are clear historic threads here - medieval market-town origins, nearby castle and abbey ruins, and a past linked to local brickmaking and maritime trades - which show up in the town’s older Georgian and Victorian streets.
Economically the borough combines retail and light industry with a significant commuter population who travel by rail and the M27 to nearby naval and commercial centres. Socially it’s a mix of family suburbs and attractive coastal hamlets, with nature reserves such as Titchfield Haven and easy access to sailing and birdwatching on the Solent that help give the area a slightly more relaxed seaside character.
