Kingston upon Thames is a riverside borough in south‑west Greater London, sitting on the southern bank of the River Thames about ten miles from central London. Its town centre grew from an ancient market settlement and the borough retains a long waterfront and several notable crossings such as Kingston Bridge, with suburbs like Surbiton nearby.
The area is rich in history and local colour: the market square houses the historic Coronation Stone, traditionally linked to Saxon kings, while modern cultural life centres on venues such as the Rose Theatre, riverside pubs and regular festivals. Georgian and Victorian architecture mixes with contemporary developments, giving a strong sense of place.
Economically Kingston is a busy retail and service hub, anchored by the Bentall Centre and numerous independent shops and restaurants, and bolstered by a sizable student population at Kingston University. Transport connections are good, with rail services from Kingston station and Norbiton station into London Waterloo and road access via the A3, making it a well‑connected commuter and local centre.
