Hulme

Hulme is an inner‑city neighbourhood just south‑west of Manchester city centre, hemmed in by the curve of the River Medlock, nearby canals and the Mancunian road corridors around Mancunian Way. Its proximity to the universities along Oxford Road and to the regenerated canal area at Castlefield gives it a mix of student residents, creative businesses and long‑standing local communities.

Historically built up with Victorian terraces and then dramatically transformed by 1960s deck‑access housing that was later demolished, Hulme is often cited as a model of community‑led regeneration: new mixed housing, the distinctive Hulme Arch, green spaces such as Hulme Park and community projects like the Hulme Community Garden coexist with pockets of deprivation. It has a lively independent arts and music scene, active neighbourhood groups and a continuing role in Manchester’s broader cultural and economic revival.
