Whalley Range

Whalley Range sits a few miles south of Manchester city centre and is best known as a largely residential, tree‑lined suburb created in the mid‑19th century by developer Samuel Brooks. Its streets mix grand red‑brick terraces and Victorian villas with later housing, and sections are protected as conservation areas that reflect the area's middle‑class origins.

Today Whalley Range is socially and culturally diverse, home to long‑established communities alongside students and young professionals thanks to its proximity to Manchester University and good transport links. Local independent shops, community centres and grassroots groups give the ward a strong neighbourhood feel, even as pockets experience redevelopment and rising housing pressures.
