Norham and Islandshires occupy a quiet, rural stretch of northern Northumberland on the south bank of the River Tweed, close to Berwick-upon-Tweed. The area is centred on the small village of Norham, where the dramatic ruins of Norham Castle overlook the river, and it includes a scatter of villages, farmland and coastal fringe that together give the landscape a distinct borderland character.
Historically this has been a contested frontier with Scotland, so history and heritage are strong selling points for visitors, alongside good walking, wildlife- and birdwatching. The local economy is largely agricultural with a boost from tourism and some commuting to nearby towns; social life tends to be village-focused and close-knit, with limited services but lively seasonal events that celebrate the area's historic and natural attractions. The name "Islandshires" also recalls historic ties to the coastal islands and parishes such as Holy Island (Lindisfarne).
