Holy Island, also known by its historic name Lindisfarne, is a small tidal island off the coast of Northumberland in England, reached by a causeway that is covered at high tide. Its landscape of dunes, saltmarsh and mudflats makes it an important spot for birdwatching and nature conservation, and the nearby Farne Islands add to the area's reputation for seabirds and seals.
Despite a tiny permanent community, the island attracts pilgrims, historians and tourists drawn to the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory - founded in the 7th century and associated with the Lindisfarne Gospels - and the dramatic viewpoint of Lindisfarne Castle. The local economy is heavily seasonal, centred on hospitality, guidance and artisanal trades, while residents remain closely connected to the rhythms of the tides and a long maritime and monastic history.
