The ward centred on Ranskill is a mainly rural part of Bassetlaw in north Nottinghamshire, lying a few miles north‑west of Retford and close to the meandering River Idle. It combines a small village core of traditional cottages and a parish church with surrounding arable farmland and pockets of more recent housing, and it developed historically as an agricultural community with a railway station serving the village in earlier decades.
Today the ward retains a village feel and a fairly tight‑knit social life centred on the village hall and local clubs, while many residents commute to nearby centres such as Doncaster and Retford thanks to good road links including the nearby A1. The area’s appeal is its quiet rural character, scenic lanes and a handful of historic buildings rather than large commercial or tourist activity.
