Fairlop sits in the north‑east of the London Borough of Redbridge and is best known for its large green heart - Fairlop Waters Country Park - a mix of reservoirs, woodland and recreational space that grew out of former gravel workings and the nearby remnants of Hainault Forest. The area’s name and local identity still echo the famous Fairlop Oak and the historic fairs once held in the area, giving a stronger rural memory to an otherwise suburban part of London.
Today it is largely residential with local shops, small businesses and leisure facilities around the park; communities are socially and culturally diverse and benefit from decent transport links into central London via the Central line and local buses, and proximity to centres such as Barkingside and Ilford. The mix of green space, sporting facilities and suburban streets makes it popular with families and people seeking a quieter corner of outer London.
