Lowther sits in the valley of the River Lowther within the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness in England. The parish is dominated by the wooded terraces, ruins and restored gardens of Lowther Castle, the historic seat of the Lowther family and the Earls of Lonsdale, and lies on the eastern fringes of the Lake District, a short drive from Penrith.
It is largely rural, with agriculture and estate management underpinning the local economy while tourism to the castle, walks and occasional events brings seasonal trade; the Lowther Estate maintains woodland, a deer park and ongoing restoration that draws visitors. Socially the community is small and dispersed, characterised by village life, stone buildings and scattered hamlets that appeal to walkers and history enthusiasts.
