Orrell is a suburb on the western ridge of Wigan in Greater Manchester, England, historically part of Lancashire. Perched above the town it has a semi-rural feel with pockets of open countryside and good views towards West Lancashire, while remaining a largely residential, commuter-focused area within easy reach of Manchester and Liverpool.
The area grew up around coal mining and other industries and still shows that industrial heritage in its Victorian terraces and street pattern, but today local life centres on small shops, community groups and sports clubs - notably the long-standing rugby club - with an economy dominated by local services and commuting to nearby urban centres. Walking routes and green spaces help keep a village-like social feel despite being close to the larger town of Wigan.
