Skelmersdale

Skelmersdale in West Lancashire, Lancashire, England is a largely post‑war new town that grew quickly from a 19th‑century mining and weaving settlement after being designated to take overspill from Liverpool. It was planned in the 1960s with distinct residential neighbourhoods separated by generous swathes of woodland and green corridors, which gives the town a more suburban, leafy feel than many towns of a similar size.

Today the town has a mixed local economy of light industry, business parks and retail, alongside ongoing regeneration and community projects; sport and social life often centre on local clubs such as Skelmersdale United. Good road links to the M58 connect it into Merseyside and the wider North West, while the town still faces the typical social and economic challenges of many former new towns, balanced by active neighbourhood groups and plenty of outdoor space.
