Wolverhampton

Metropolitan district in England

Coordinates:52.59, -2.13
OS grid ref:SO 91 99

Wolverhampton is a metropolitan district in the heart of the West Midlands, historically part of the industrial Black Country and lying a short distance north-west of Birmingham. It grew rapidly in the 19th century on a mix of metalworking, lock- and key-making, coal and canals, and remnants of that industrial fabric can still be seen around the old canal corridors and Victorian terraces; the district today is also known for Molineux Stadium, home of the city’s football club.

Contemporary Wolverhampton combines ongoing regeneration with a diverse cultural life - institutions such as the University of Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and the Grand Theatre sit alongside parks like West Park and waterways such as the Wyrley and Essington Canal. Its economy is mixed, with remaining light manufacturing and engineering alongside public services, education and a growing creative sector, and the district reflects a multicultural population that shapes its dining, festivals and community life.
