Culmore sits beside the mouth of the River Foyle, overlooking Lough Foyle and just a few miles from Derry in the Derry City and Strabane district of Northern Ireland. Its coastal position has given it a maritime character and a touch of history - the Promenade and nearby headland at Culmore Point were locations of defensive works in earlier centuries and still offer waterside views and walking routes.
Today Culmore is largely residential with local shops, schools and active community groups; it shares economic and cultural links with Derry while retaining a village-like feel. Community centres, sports clubs and regeneration projects have been important in recent years, and local events and social networks remain central to life in the area.
