Derry City and Strabane

District council area in Northern Ireland

Coordinates:54.85, -7.38

The Derry City and Strabane district covers much of the northwest of Northern Ireland, centred on the walled city of Derry and the market town of Strabane. The River Foyle runs through the city and the surrounding countryside includes peatlands and the rolling hills of the Sperrin Mountains; the district also sits along the border with the Republic of Ireland.

Culturally it is lively: Derry is famous for its 17th‑century walls, the political murals of the Bogside, the distinctive Guildhall and a busy festival calendar including a large Halloween programme. Economically the area combines public services, retail and cross‑border trade with agriculture in rural parts and a growing creative and tech scene; the district carries deep historical significance from the Troubles and has been the focus of regeneration and cross‑community initiatives and expanding tourism since the peace process.
