Kilkeel

The Kilkeel electoral ward sits on the southern County Down coast within the Newry, Mourne and Down district of Northern Ireland. It covers the town of Kilkeel and immediate rural hinterland at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, giving the ward a striking mix of coastal harbour scenes and upland scenery that attracts walkers and visitors as well as serving local needs.

Historically centred on fishing, Kilkeel remains one of Northern Ireland’s important fishing ports, while the local economy also includes agriculture, small-scale industry and growing tourism. The ward has a distinct maritime and rural community spirit, with traditions tied to the sea and local Gaelic games, and a history of 19th–20th century development linked to road and rail changes that shaped its modern character.
