Ballater

Ballater is a small Victorian village in Aberdeenshire, set on the banks of the River Dee at the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park. It sits on the A93 through Royal Deeside, about an hour from Aberdeen, and functions as a handy gateway for hillwalkers, anglers and visitors heading to Balmoral Castle and the surrounding high country.

Much of the village’s character comes from its 19th‑century boom - Victorian architecture, granite buildings, independent shops, tearooms and craft galleries - shaped by the arrival of the railway and royal patronage that made Royal Deeside fashionable. Today the local economy is driven by tourism and outdoor pursuits (walking, mountain biking, salmon fishing) while a close‑knit community keeps local markets, events and heritage visible throughout the year.
