Colonsay sits in the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland, within Argyll and Bute. It’s a low, gently rolling island of machair and white sandy bays such as Kiloran Bay, famed for its seabirds, wild flowers and a quiet, sweeping coastline. The tiny main settlement at Scalasaig is where most island life centres, with regular ferry and occasional air links to the mainland.
Culturally the island has a strong Gaelic and crofting heritage, visible in small-scale farming, fishing and a lively community calendar; nearby Oronsay adds monastic ruins and important archaeological sites. Tourism, local crafts and horticulture - most notably the historic gardens at Colonsay House - now complement traditional livelihoods, and the island is prized for its tranquillity and welcoming local community.
