Oronsay is a small, low-lying tidal island off Colonsay in the Inner Hebrides, part of Argyll and Bute, Scotland. At low tide it can be reached on foot across a shifting sand causeway, and its machair, sandy beaches and rocky skerries make it a magnet for seabirds, grey seals and wildflower enthusiasts.
Despite its tiny size the island has a strong cultural and historic presence: the remains of a medieval priory and early carved stone slabs hint at a monastic past and local archaeology, while more recent use has centred on grazing and seasonal visits rather than permanent habitation. Today it’s valued for conservation, quiet coastal walks and as an evocative destination for boaters and birdwatchers rather than for any significant commercial activity.
