Islay sits off the west coast of Scotland as one of the southern Inner Hebrides, and is administered within Argyll and Bute. The island is unusually low‑lying for the Hebrides, with extensive peat bogs, machair and sandy bays, a mild oceanic climate and internationally important birdlife around places such as Loch Gruinart, while ferries link it with Kennacraig on the mainland and the neighbouring island of Jura.
Islay’s economy and reputation are closely tied to its whisky industry, with distilleries at locations like Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Bowmore attracting tourists to the annual Fèis Ìle as well as year‑round tastings. The island also has a strong Gaelic and crofting heritage, notable early Christian archaeology such as the Kildalton cross, and a small, tight‑knit community where farming, peat cutting and hospitality remain important.
