Port Ellen is a small harbour village on the south coast of Islay in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, sitting on a sheltered bay that looks across the Sound of Islay. It’s the island’s main ferry gateway to Kennacraig on the mainland and a handy base for visitors, with peat moorland, pebble beaches and easy access to famed smoky single malts - nearby distilleries include Lagavulin and Laphroaig, while the old Port Ellen distillery (closed in 1983) remains one of Islay’s most collectible names.
Established as a planned settlement in the early 19th century and named after the laird’s wife, the village’s economy mixes whisky, ferry traffic, fishing and tourism, with birdwatching, walking and the island’s annual Fèis Ìle drawing visitors. Despite modern pressures it retains a small, tight-knit community and a strong cultural identity rooted in Gaelic and maritime traditions, with simple local services serving residents and guests alike.
