Tobermory is the main town on the Isle of Mull, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, sitting around a horseshoe harbour on the Sound of Mull. Famous for its row of brightly painted waterfront buildings and a small local distillery producing a single malt, it began as a planned fishing port in the late 18th century and takes its name from the Gaelic Tobar Mhoire, “Mary’s well”.
Today a community of roughly a thousand people, Tobermory relies on tourism, boats and fishing; regular boat trips run from the harbour for wildlife and seabird watching to islands such as Staffa and Lunga. The town’s distinctive scenery also made it the inspiration and filming location for the children’s TV series Balamory, and it retains a lively local arts, food and island-services scene alongside its historic roots.
