Kirkcudbright is a compact harbour town on the estuary of the River Dee in Dumfries and Galloway, southern Scotland. Its tidal harbour, narrow streets and a mix of medieval and Georgian buildings - including the remains of MacLellan's Castle - give it a distinctly coastal, historic character that attracts walkers and visitors to the Solway coast.
The town is best known as an artists' hub, dubbed an "Artists' Town" after a late 19th‑ and early 20th‑century colony; galleries and workshops such as Kirkcudbright Galleries remain important to the local economy alongside tourism, fishing and surrounding agriculture. Its proximity to scenic areas like the Galloway Forest Park and the Solway Firth also makes it a popular base for outdoor activities and dark‑sky watching.
