Workington, historically in Cumberland, is a coastal town at the mouth of the River Derwent where it meets the Irish Sea and the Solway Firth. Backed by low-lying coastal plains with the Cumbrian hills and the Lake District fells not far inland, it combines an industrial waterfront setting with easy access to some very attractive countryside.
The town grew up around coal, iron and steel and a busy harbour, and like many industrial centres it went through economic decline in the late 20th century; today the port, light industry and tourism linked to the nearby fells all play a part in the local economy. Workington retains a strong community identity and sporting culture, has invested in waterfront regeneration and flood defences after several severe floods, and remains an example of a resilient Cumbrian town navigating post‑industrial change.
