Lochar is an electoral ward to the east of Dumfries that mixes suburban neighbourhoods and open farming country, with a low-lying peatland - Lochar Moss - forming a distinctive natural feature. The ward sits close to the tidal flats of the Solway Firth, so the landscape and wildlife, especially birdlife, play an important part in its local character and leisure activities.
Locally the area has a history of quarrying - notably around Locharbriggs with its well-known red sandstone used in many regional buildings - alongside ongoing agriculture and a commuter economy centred on Dumfries. Conservation and peatland restoration work at Lochar Moss, and the proximity of historic sites such as Caerlaverock, give the ward a mix of rural heritage and active community interest in landscape and biodiversity.
