Sanquhar

Sanquhar is a small market town in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, lying in the historic valley of Nithsdale on the banks of the River Nith. It sits on the A76 corridor and is framed by the rolling hills of the Southern Uplands, giving a compact, rural character with good road and rail links to larger centres.

The town is noted for a few distinctive cultural touches: it famously produces the traditional Sanquhar knitting pattern and the building promoted as the Sanquhar Old Post Office claims to be the oldest post office in the world. There are also strong Covenanter associations - notably the 1680 Sanquhar Declaration - and an industrial past in coal and iron, while today the community balances local services, heritage tourism and regular community events.
