Wick sits at the eastern edge of the northern Scottish mainland in the historic county of Caithness, within the Highland council area of Scotland. The town grew up around the mouth of the Wick River and a natural harbour, its name reflecting Old Norse roots; in the 19th century Wick was a booming herring port and you can still see traces of that maritime past, including the dramatic ruin of Old Wick Castle on the headland.
Today Wick retains a working harbour and the celebrated Old Pulteney Distillery, known as a distinctly maritime malt, while the local economy mixes fishing, energy and tourism. It’s a handy base for visiting John o' Groats, Dunnet Head and Duncansby Head, and is served by Wick Airport, giving visitors a surprisingly accessible slice of northern coastal life.
