Highland (Council area) covers much of the northern third of Scotland and is the largest council area in the UK by land area, stretching from the north‑east coast across the Great Glen to the jagged west coast and a scattering of islands. Its landscape is famously dramatic: rugged mountains (including Ben Nevis and parts of the Cairngorms), deep freshwater lochs such as Loch Ness, sea lochs and islands like the Isle of Skye and the Small Isles, which together make it a major draw for walkers, climbers and photographers.
The administrative and commercial centre is Inverness, close to Culloden Moor, the site of the 1746 battle that shaped modern Scottish history. The local economy mixes tourism, whisky distilling, crofting, fishing, renewables and public services, while Gaelic language and traditional music remain culturally important in many communities. Rural depopulation and seasonal employment are ongoing social challenges, but growing transport links and Inverness’s expansion have helped stabilise parts of the region.
