Burghead is a compact coastal village on the shores of the Moray Firth in Moray, Scotland, sited on a striking rocky headland with a small harbour and sandy stretches. The headland preserves the remains of one of the largest known Pictish promontory forts, and several carved Pictish slabs - the so‑called Burghead Bulls - were found there and are now displayed in the Elgin Museum; walkers and birdwatchers also enjoy views over the firth where dolphins and seabirds are commonly seen.
Historically a Pictish stronghold and later a busy fishing port (notably herring), Burghead retains a strong local identity and a tight‑knit community while its economy today mixes fishing, local services and tourism. It’s within easy reach of towns such as Elgin and Lossiemouth, making it a pleasant base for exploring the north coast of Moray.
