Rothes is a small town on the banks of the River Spey in the heart of Speyside, within the council area of Moray in north‑east Scotland. It sits amid rolling farmland and commercial conifer plantations at the edge of the Cairngorms foothills and is close to sections of the Speyside Way, so it’s popular with walkers and anglers as well as whisky visitors.
The town is best known for its whisky heritage - several distilleries and cooperages are based here, notably the Glenrothes distillery, making Rothes an important stop on the local whisky tourism circuit such as the Malt Whisky Trail. Historically the settlement grew around agriculture and distilling, and today its compact high street, Victorian buildings and repurposed industrial sites reflect a community balanced between traditional industry, tourism and rural life.
